Project Title: What is the current situation in Nottingham with South Asian young men’s involvement in serious organised gangs?

What is your connection to Nottingham, and what were you doing before starting this research placement?

I was born and bred in this city and now my children are a part of its many communities. Before taking on the research placement I was working with The Scout Association as a programme Delivery Officer, in the youth programme team. I also volunteer for the movement and ran my own scout group for a number of years as Group Scout Leader. It was here I developed a passion to help young people achieve their potential through opportunity and education. 

What motivated you to apply for this specific research placement project?

My lived experience has bought me to this project and wanting better for the young people I see on the streets every day. If I can work out the reasons behind the question ‘Why’ I hope to put into practice actionable steps in improving their lives and helping Nottingham city positively. 

Why do you think this research is important?

This research will help improve the lives of an entire generation and will look to make more young people strive to become productive and proactive members of society. Positively changing what Nottingham currently looks like and feels like to live in.

What do you hope to be doing in 5 years’ time? (personally and/or professionally) 

Professionally, I hope the skills I pick up during this research project can help elevate my Co(I)lab PhD application in the winter. I hope on successful completion of this PhD I can look into a career as a research fellow and make positive impacts in communities all around Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
