Project Title: Language in Nottingham: celebrating language as intangible cultural heritage
What were you doing before starting this PhD?
Prior to my PhD, I was working as a data and evaluation officer for a university-based project that works towards making doctoral studies more equitable, particularly for people racially minoritised backgrounds. I am also a working musician, active within the jazz, alternative, and film soundtrack scenes.
What motivated you to apply for this specific PhD project?
I felt this project was an amazing convergence of all my interests. My academic background is in Slavic languages and translation of multilingual texts. Professionally, I have worked in areas that focused on equity and sustainability, particularly for people from under represented groups. And finally, I am a practicing artist working out of Nottingham. To bring all these interests together on a project that can have a positive, sustainable impact on Nottingham is a dream.
What difference do you hope to make in Nottingham through this research?
I think Nottingham (and the wider East Midlands) is often misunderstood and overlooked. There are some unique linguistic heritages here and the region is incredibly, linguistically diverse. This is true for other parts of the UK and is often justly celebrated. However, existing research is showing that people in Nottingham sometimes have negative associations with the way we talk and use language. I think by working with the people of Nottingham to demonstrate and celebrate what we hold here can be an amazing thing for us to be proud of and receive wider recognition. I hope to be able to finish the project and have made a significant contribution to the existing research. It is important to me to create something that people can own and the tools provided can live organically and sustainably.
What do you hope to be doing in 5 years’ time? (personally and/or professionally)
In 5 years’ time, I would like to either be working in the arts and/or heritage sector on projects that focus on cultural advocacy and promotion, or continuing work professionally as a researcher.
