2023 Research Placement Project
About The Project
The emphasis of this project is is on examining the role of Black housing activists, a group that is frequently underrepresented in housing activism literature. The placement will give the candidate the academic know-how and abilities needed to carry out an in-depth investigation into the opinions and experiences of Black housing activists in Nottingham. Additionally, the project seeks to aid a grassroots initiative into Nottingham’s history and growth of Black social housing, addressing contemporary challenges important to the student’s study and research.
This project has been co-created and is supported by researchers from Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham and partners at TunTum Housing Association.
Project Aims
This placement project’s primary goal is for the student to write a 3,000-word academic report that highlights the current knowledge, and knowledge gaps, regarding Black social housing activity in Nottingham.
The Project Team
- Placement Candidate: Henri Baptiste
- Lead Supervisor: Dr. Ricky Gee, NTU
Dr. Ricky Gee, a senior lecturer and sociologist, will provide expertise in sociology and public sociology. Ricky’s collaborative work with various organizations demonstrates his commitment to engaging with multiple publics and addressing real-world problems using sociological competence.
- Co-Supervisor: Cath Williams, UoN
Cath Williams, an Assistant Professor in Social Work, has extensive experience working within black communities and a strong interest in the impact of migration on black family relationships. Her expertise in social work theory and practice will be valuable in supporting the student’s research.
- Community Supervisor: Richard Renwick, TunTum
Richard Renwick is the Chief Executive of TunTum Housing Association, a black-led organization providing housing and community projects for Nottingham’s black community. Richard’s expertise in social housing and community activism will be invaluable in guiding the student’s research on Black housing activists in Nottingham.
